Attention and AEP
The Noise Problem in Peak Season
If Medicare sales is the Navy SEAL training of sales, AEP is the peak battleground.
During Annual Enrollment, senior beneficiaries are bombarded with TV commercials, direct mailers, robocalls, and competing agent pitches. Their cognitive load is completely maxed out. Because of this extreme market noise, their default response to any sales outreach is an immediate defense response: hang up, delete, or throw away.
You can have deep product knowledge and the best intentions, but if you fail to capture and hold Attention, you will never get the chance to serve them.
Besides that, as a broker, you must pay attention to the CMS changes, plan exits, commission adjustments that will affect your business. How do you gain attention and be attentive at the same time?
Passing the 3-Second Filter
In a market turned up to maximum volume, screaming louder doesn't work—radical relevance does.
Beneficiaries filter every interaction in the first 3 seconds. To pass their filter, you must eliminate standard sales triggers and establish immediate relevance:
Ditch the "Me" Opener: Starting a call with "Hi, my name is Faye with F S Horton Insurance Professionals and I'm calling to discuss your Medicare options..." signals an immediate pitch.
Lead with Context: Frame your opening around what they care about right now: "I'm calling because several major hospital networks and prescription drug tiers in our area updated their provider contracts for next year..."
Reciprocal Attention: Holding attention requires active listening. When you pause for 2–3 seconds after a beneficiary answers, it proves you are digesting their words rather than waiting to deliver a pitch. The opening mentioned above gets the attention, now you must keep the attention to move through the 5 step sales process compliantly.*
The Attention Formula for AEP
To win and hold attention during AEP:
Simplify the Complex: Break down overwhelming details like deductibles, formularies, and coverage gaps into simple, clear concepts. Use examples that are familiar to the customer.
Respect Their Time: Acknowledge the seasonal chaos upfront and ask for permission to share a brief conversation to gather information for their Annual Medicare Review.
Focus on the Next Step: Don't try to explain the entire plan in the first 30 seconds. Your only goal in the opening moment is to earn the next minute of conversation.
Next week, we examine the third pillar: Authority and AEP—and why being a "nice broker" isn't enough when beneficiaries need a doctor-level or lawyer-level guide.
