WORTH REPEATING!
Authority and AEP
Why Being “nice” Won’t Close Sales This AEP
The Cost of Hesitation in High-Stakes Sales
This year inMedicare sales product knowledge alone isn't enough.
During AEP, senior beneficiaries face overwhelming confusion: changing drug formularies, network shifts, rising deductibles, and complex benefit structures. A confused mind faced with a decision does not act—it retreats. If you waver, use hesitant language, or appear unsure about plan mechanics, the prospect feels unsafe.
Many brokers confuse Authority with aggressive selling. True Authority is quiet certainty. It is the confidence that comes from deep local market expertise, absolute regulatory compliance, and complete clarity. Yes, the models of multi-state, telephone sales works well in well oiled organizations. Without them ⅓ of the Medicare beneficiaries would never know as much as they do about plans. There’s a place for that. True Authority, however, is knowing the connections, the providers (not just the Primary Care Provider), the Preferred Pharmacies, the supplemental providers, what is available and how the benefits are delivered, the level of customer service at the carrier level and how you fit into this circle.
Operating Like a Surgeon, Not a Waiter
Too many Medicare brokers operate like order-takers at a restaurant:
The Order-Taker: "What kind of coverage are you looking for today? Do you want a prescription drug plan or Medicare Advantage?" Placing the burden of diagnosis on a confused beneficiary increases their anxiety.
The Trusted Doctor: Conducts thorough diagnostics, asks precise questions about physicians, medications, and financial needs, and then prescribes the exact solution.
The Advisor Frame: "Mrs. Johnson, based on your doctor list and your current prescription tier updates for next year, staying on your current plan leaves you exposed to a $1,800 out-of-pocket gap. Here is the exact adjustment that fixes that."
When you discuss health, finances, and long-term security, beneficiaries aren't looking for an order-taker—they are seeking an expert guide they can trust without reservation.
Projecting Authority This AEP
To establish immediate Authority during peak season:
Eliminate Hesitant Language: Replace phrases like "I think this plan might work..." with "Based on your specific medications and preferred providers, this option provides the highest protection because..."
Master Local Market Context: Know regional hospital network changes, pharmacy tier updates, and carrier shifts before your prospects even ask about them.
Guide with Certainty: Answer the questions beneficiaries should be asking before they even think to bring them up.
When beneficiaries feel safe in your expertise, enrolling with you becomes the natural, logical choice.
Next week, we bring all three pillars together—Authenticity, Attention, and Authority—to build your complete AEP game plan.
